Imperial
Beach is a quaint city, but mostly the town has a rare innocence, and a
relaxed atmosphere. "I. B." boasts the temperate, sunny-but cool weather,
for which the California coast is famous. With a short thermometer, 50 to
80 degrees, the climate is like Spring or early Fall year round. At a
gentle pace you can walk the 3.5 miles of the city beach front in about an
hour. It's likely you will see surfers, and boogie borders, surf
fisherman, and several species of shore birds. Looking south you will see
the Plaza De Monumental, Tijuana's famous "Bullring by the Sea" just
across the International border with Mexico. Near the southeast comer
Imperial is Seacoast Drive and Imperial Beach Boulevard, you will find
yourself at the edge of the Tijuana Estuary, or the sloughs, as it is
commonly referred to. Walking east you will see a dirt path angling off to
the right. Down this path, a very short walk, you will be at the Tijuana
Estuary Visitor Center. Here you can learn about the native foliage and
animal life that is home to many species of birds, some endangered. It is
a wonderful place to observe, study reflect, and play.
For
the most part, the city of Imperial Beach is a residential and
recreational area with a proportion of it's local business related to
retailing and services. A wide variety of recreation can be found without
commercialism - Water sports are especially popular, and enjoyed year
round. You should be sure to visit our new Portwood Pier Plaza as well.
Imperial Beach operates a 1,200 foot municipal fishing pier, with free
fishing to the public. Imperial Beach also hosts the U. S. Open Sandcastle
Competition every summer. This event attracts some 250,000 spectators who
come to enjoy the Sandcastles and Street Fair complete with an
overwhelming firework display and parade. Imperial Beach is also home of
The Chamber of Commerce Triathlon and The Chili & Jazz Festival held every
summer.
